Automotive students from EKC Dover College competed in the annual cross-college soapbox race at EKC Broadstairs College and finished in first place with the fastest racing time.

Before the race began, Automotive lecturer, David Broderick, commented, “We were invited to come race and beat the Broadstairs Team, which is why we’re here. This is a new car from last year with new drivers and we’ve never tested it. Compared to last year, this one is stronger and steers better.”

Racers started at the top of the hill and took their turn one at time. Hay bales at the bottom of the hill acted as obstacles to test the soapbox cars’ steering.
Along with Engineering, Construction, Automotive, and Junior College students racing down the hill, the EKC Broadstairs College Estates Team took their turn. Halfway down the track, they had one broken wheel and were drenched in water from student and staff bystanders.

Sophie, a Level 2 Automotive student drove the winning soapbox car down the track. She said, “Everyone was coming together and having a great time; it was brilliant. We only finished making the car yesterday but we got through the race and we won.”
She has plans to build a race car for Lydden Hill Race Circuit next year.
