Travel and Tourism students recently visited the British Airways Global Learning Academy at Heathrow to take part in Safety and Emergency Procedures training.
It is the same type of training that future cabin crew members experience, and it gave our students an insight into how people in the industry are prepared for a range of scenarios.
If you are thinking about studying Travel and Tourism, here are some of the lessons that our students took away from the day, which can now help them in any career.
1. Remaining calm under pressure
During the day, students practised realistic emergency situations, including evacuation drills and fire-safety.
They learnt how to stay focused, follow instructions and think clearly when things get challenging.
For our learners, it gave them a sense of how important remaining calm is in any fast-moving situation, no matter their career.
2. Working effectively in a team
Much of the training required students to work together, whether it was managing equipment, completing challenges, or supporting each other in simulation exercises.
They discovered how important communication, cooperation and quick thinking are when relying on a team to get things done.
Having these skills is key to being successful in the workplace.
3. Building personal confidence
Being in a professional training environment with experienced cabin crew trainers, gave the students the chance to try new things and to take on tasks they hadn’t done before.
See what they were really capable of means that our learners now feel more confident in themselves and in their ability to handle unexpected challenges.
By studying Travel and Tourism at College, you’ll also discover your true potential and what you’re capable of.
4. Understanding responsibility
With activities like practising evacuation drills, our students learnt just how much responsibility is involved across a range of Travel and Tourism roles.
They’ve now gained a better understanding of why rules and processes exist, and how their actions can affect the safety of others.
5. Exploring career options
Taking part in the training gave students a glimpse into the wide range of careers in Travel and Tourism, in addition to skills that can be transferred to other sectors.
While some were inspired by cabin crew roles, the training also gave a glimpse into what life would be like in airport operations, hospitality, customer service and events management.
