Autumn Community Week Roundup

15 November 2024
Our Autumn Community Week has seen students and staff from across the College take part in social action projects.

Community Week is an ongoing commitment where students and staff from across the College take part in social action projects.

It is a incredible opportunity for students to use the skills they have learnt and are currently learning to help the local community.

Art and Design | Christmas baubles and lantern repairing

The creative students of Dover have been putting their talents to good use this community week.

Throughout the week the students have been working on two projects. The first being decorating Christmas baubles which will be sold to raise money for the Dover smART project, and the second being helping the Future Foundry create and repair their lanterns ahead of the Winter Festival in December.

Painted baubles

Level 2 Art students were allowed to use any medium and designs they wanted. Some students stuck to traditional designs whilst others found inspiration from local landmarks such as Dover Castle.

These beautiful baubles will be sold to raise money for Dover smART project, a local charity who support disadvantaged children in Dover, especially Young Carers, through creative activities to boost confidence and wellbeing.

Level 3 Art and Design students went to the Future Foundry in the Charlton Centre in Dover. They were helping the team prepare for their upcoming Winter Festival by making, fixing and designing lanterns which will help light the streets of Dover during the parade.

The students helped the team make the lanterns and repair older lanterns which will be lit up and paraded around Dover. The team at Future Foundry were really impressed with the stunning designs and creativity of the students. The Winter Festive will take place on 7th December starting in Pencester Gardens.

Construction and the Built Environment | Aylesham Primary School muddy obstacle course

The Plumbing department has ambitious plans to turn the playground at Aylesham Primary School into a muddy wonderland where children can play and let their imaginations run wild.

The transformation will include a mud kitchen, a tire obstacle course, and a stationary car for imaginative adventures.

Students digging holes for giant tyres

The Level 2 Plumbing students got stuck into the project. They dedicated their time to creating an obstacle course for the Primary School’s playground. Their project involved digging a hole large enough to bury half of a giant tire, working in teams of three or four to shovel soil, break through stone with pickaxes, and move the tires into place.

Hair and Beauty | Raffle for Rubie Boyton

Our future hairdressers have organised a raffle raising money for a young lady who aspired to lead a career in the hair and beauty industry – Rubie Boyton. Rubie is a local 16-year-old who suffered a cardiac arrest in May. She is currently in hospital unable to talk, walk or sit unaided. Rubie’s family has hopes to bring her home and help her live the best life she can.

Rubie’s story resonated with Tina, the Programme Director, who decided to host a raffle to raise money to get Rubie home. The students have been selling raffle tickets for the hamper which is filled with over £500 of professional hair products and equipment including a Diva Veloce 3800 Hairdryer.

The draw will take place in the Hair and Beauty department and tickets are just £1. Make sure to head over to get your ticket and support this worthy cause.

It has been great to see so many projects happening this Community Week, with some to develop further over the coming weeks and months.
