Hands-on Computing workshop gives students real-world experience

10 December 2025
Computing students work together in teams to create a computer network to gain experience relevant to the industry.

Our T Level in Digital Support and Security students worked hard this term on an all-day, interactive workshop that simulated a professional computer network system, building and troubleshooting their own miniature office network.

“This is all off their digital environment and networking unit. They have to learn how to best deploy a network and to make sure it operates in the most efficient way,” said Computing lecturer, Ross.

Em and Max worked on setting up network devices to a router and switch.

The students were placed into three dedicated teams with first year and second year students paired together to complete their tasks. Em and Max worked to create a network.

“We’re using all of this different technology to connect the switch and the router to the server and we can see what’s going on by looking at the screens here,” said Em, first year T Level in Digital Support and Security student.

Year two student, Arlie, teaches year one students how to set up an AI system.

In the front of the room, four students created a private AI system to be used by these newly set-up networks.

Luca and Arlie helped to re-create this task that they had experienced in industry just a few weeks prior to the workshop when they attended a work placement day at Iconology, an IT Support service provider in Kent.

“Some of our year-two students are supporting the year-one group. By pairing year twos with year ones, we’ve created an apprenticeship-style environment right in the classroom,” said Ross.

At the back of the room, two students worked as IT support, repairing and evaluating old devices that have been donated to EKC Dover College.

“I feel like this course will help me with work experience and give me more knowledge of the computer space. It will help me go through to a higher level of knowledge of computers,” said Hayden, first year T level student.
