Summer is our Student Experience Officer here at EKC Dover College. She is here to make your College experience full of fun events, trips and enrichment opportunities so that you make great memories whilst you study.
She also oversees the Students’ Union, which you can become involved with. We sat down with her to find out a little bit more about her and what she does in her role.
How did you become Dover’s Student Experience Officer?
I was actually on maternity leave when I found this role at EKC Dover College. My previous role was a 1 to 1 teaching assistant so I already had some of the key skills that I could transfer over. In that role I ran a lunch club and a break club, which were full of activities. Similar to the Student Centre in Dover, we would play lots of games as well as go through homework. Due to this I felt it was a good fit for me to come to the College.
What is planned over the next year?
I have a lot planned for this year. I am looking into lots of trips which are sure to be really fun. I want to do some more outdoor activities as we have a great space for it here on campus. We also have the normal events coming up such as Celebration days and our End of Year Party which I am really excited about. We also have our Students’ Union Introduction event soon full of activities as well as chances for students to meet the new members of their Students’ Union in a fun and more informal way.
Why should I get involved with the Students’ Union?
The Students Union is an incredible thing to be a part of whilst at College. If anyone is willing to do it they should step up and just go for it. It acts as the voice of the College, and the students will come to you in your SU role with any problems or improvements they may have. You can pass this onto the SU President or myself, and work with us as we go through ideas and try to make the College a better place for everyone based on this feedback.
Do you have advice for new students?
One piece of advice that I would give, is that you should reach out for the support that is offered here. I think that not many people will realise the amount of support they can get when they come to College, and they may be too afraid to ask for it, but there’s a lot of help here at EKC Dover College. Whether your issue is big or small you should always reach out, all of the staff will be happy to help you in any way they can.
Where can students find you?
Students can find me in the Student Centre which is on the 4th Floor of the Vision Building. This is the room where students can enjoy playing Xbox, Playstation or Nintendo games, as well as Pool, Air Hockey and a variety of arcade games such as Mortal Kombat. You can also use this space to just chill out in your breaks or lunchtimes.
