Preparing for your work placement is a very exciting opportunity.
It’s an excellent chance to put the knowledge you’ve gained in the classroom into practice, and it can serve as a valuable stepping stone towards your future career.
We caught up with Industry Liaison Officer, Tanya Conyers-Silverthorn, from the Service Industries department, who has shared some of her top tips that will help you make the most of your work placement.
- Make an Outstanding First Impression:
First impressions matter and can set the tone for your entire placement. Make sure you dress appropriately for your workplace. Find out the company dress code beforehand and ensure your outfit is clean and tidy.
When meeting new colleagues, maintain good eye contact and offer a firm handshake. These non-verbal actions show that you are confident and professional.
- Plan Your Schedule:
Know exactly what time you’re expected to arrive on your first day and every day that follows. It’s recommended that you arrive at least 10-15 minutes early to allow time to settle in and prepare for the day ahead.
Check your route to work in advance and account for potential delays, public transport timetables or traffic. Being punctual shows that you have respect for your employer’s time and will display how reliable you are.
- Show Initiative and Enthusiasm:
One of the most valuable traits you can demonstrate during your placement is initiative. If you find yourself without a task, don’t wait for direction. You can actively seek out new responsibilities by asking your supervisor or colleagues if there’s anything you can help with. This approach shows that you are enthusiastic and ready to learn.
- Maximise Every Opportunity:
Your work placement is more than just work experience. It’s a chance to develop new skills, understand industry practices, and build professional relationships. Take advantage of every opportunity presented to you, whether it’s sitting in on meetings, learning new systems, or taking on challenging tasks. Each experience contributes to your professional development.
- Prioritise Your Wellbeing:
The importance of proper rest cannot be overstated. Make sure that you are getting a good night’s sleep before your placement, especially on the first day. Being well-rested helps you stay alert, maintain focus, and perform at your best.
