What is an Access to HE course?

16 December 2025
Discover how our Access to HE programmes can empower adult learners to pursue university-level qualifications through career-focused courses.

If you’re an adult learner aiming for university but haven’t achieved the qualifications for entry yet, or if you’re looking to study something new, an Access to Higher Education (HE) course could be you.

What is an Access to HE course?

An Access to HE qualification is a Level 3 qualification, just like A Levels, but designed specifically for learners aged 19+. These courses are typically completed in one year and recognised by universities across the UK as an alternative to traditional qualifications.

At EKC Dover College, we offer the following pathways:

These courses are carefully structured programmes that teach you how to study at university level, with an emphasis on academic writing, independent research, critical thinking, and time management.

“As someone who left mainstream education at the age of 18, I think it’s a really good way to get back into it. I’m now heading to university to study Adult Nursing, which is something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but never thought I’d be able to because I dropped out of Sixth Form.” Lily studied on our Access to HE: Healthcare Professionals course and is now thriving at university.

How are the Access to HE courses different to other course types?

Tailored for adult learners

Access to HE courses consider that adult learners may be balancing work, family or other commitments. The course structure reflects this, with flexible learning, supportive tutors, and a fast-tracked timeline.

Career-focused pathways

Access to HE courses are specialised, with course content being aligned with your intended university degree or career.

University preparation

Access to HE courses don’t just teach you subject knowledge, they prepare you for the style and demands of university-level education. You’ll learn how to write essays, reference sources, engage in seminars, and present arguments - all skills that are rarely taught in-depth on other Level 3 courses.

Fast track to university

Because these are one-year intensive programmes, Access to HE courses get you to university sooner than taking other pathways that span across two years.
