Where could a T Level take you?

22 July 2024
Read our blog on the many ways a T Level can help you get to where you want to go after college.

Completing a T Level qualification will open a variety of options for your future.

Whether you’re eager to jump straight into the workplace, continue your studies at University, or combine earning and learning through an Apprenticeship, a T Level will provide you with a solid understanding of your chosen subject area.

So, what route could you take after completing a T Level?

1. Enter the Workplace

One of the key selling points of T Levels is their strong focus on practical skills and real-world experience.  Created in collaboration with industry leaders, you will be learning the skills employers are looking for, equipping you with the industry-specific knowledge and hands-on experience you need to thrive in the workplace.

With a T Level qualification on your CV, you will be able to apply for jobs in your subject area, often at a higher starting position than other school leavers.

Nat Lively was among the first students to study the T Level Computing course and is now employed as the Technical Operations Manager at The Overseas Teacher, a subsidiary company of ADM Computing Ltd.

Nat commented: “The T Level was a unique opportunity which allowed me to undertake relevant work experience in my field, letting me understand aspects of my course when applied in a practical setting – benefitting my coursework and exam heavily thanks to the first-hand knowledge I gained. Because I worked with The Overseas Teacher for an extended period during my studies, they were able to get to know me and my work style which resulted in them offering me full-time employment.”

2. Continue your studies at University

One T Level is equivalent to three A Levels, and is worth the same number of UCAS points.

The table below shows how much each T Level grade is worth in UCAS Tariff points, and the equivalent A Level grades:

UCAS Tariff PointsT Level Overall GradeA Level Overall Grades
168 Distinction*
(A* on the ‘core’ and distinction in the ‘occupational specialism’)

144 Distinction AAA
120 Merit BBB
96 Pass
(C or above on the ‘core’)

So, if you aspire to achieve higher levels of study, a T Level can be the perfect stepping stone in getting you into University.

3. Apprenticeships

If you’d like the best of both worlds, where you can earn a salary whilst still learning, you could consider a Higher Apprenticeship.

Higher Apprenticeships are designed for students with a Level 3 qualification, like a T Level, and often lead to roles such as Senior Technician or Junior Manager.

Degree Apprenticeships are even more advanced. You’ll work towards a full Bachelor’s or Master’s degree whilst being employed in your chosen sector.

4. Professional Qualifications

Certain professions require additional certifications or qualifications. T Levels can serve as a strong foundation to pursue these further qualifications, often with reduced time and cost due to the level of knowledge you already have.

Industries such as IT often have specific certifications, like Cisco for networking, that can enhance your employability and expertise. In some industries, like Engineering and Construction, achieving chartered status is a mark of professional recognition and can lead to more advanced job roles and career opportunities.

5. Take Your Future in Your Own Hands

For some, the thought of working for themselves gives them the determination to succeed. From understanding industry-specific practices to transferable professional skills, T Levels can prepare you for the challenges of entrepreneurship.

So, if you have the passion and belief, you could consider starting your own business. Whether it’s a tech start-up or contractors’ firm, the knowledge gained from your qualification can help you navigate the industry and the complexities of running a business.

Alternatively, you may want to freelance. This is particularly common in the Digital or Building Services industries, and will enable you to showcase your skills whilst gaining experience in a variety of settings and networking with other professionals in the industry.

Ultimately, completing a T Level will open up an array of pathways tailored to your different career aspirations and educational goals. Regardless of what journey you decide to go on, you will be ready for success.
