Course overview

Do you love photography and want to explore it more deeply? Our Introduction to Photography course is designed especially for adults who want to learn the art and craft of analogue photography from camera mechanics to developing and printing your own images.
Across a series of practical sessions, you’ll work with 35mm SLR film cameras and learn traditional black and white film processing in our dedicated darkroom. This hands-on course gives you the chance to build real skills, unleash your creativity, and gain confidence behind the lens.

Course information

On this course, you’ll gain a solid foundation in traditional photography techniques, with an emphasis on practical experience and creative expression.

You will learn how to:
Handle and control analogue cameras
Understand how to operate a 35mm SLR camera, adjust settings and make informed choices about exposure and light metering.
Shoot and develop your own film
Capture your own black and white photographs and take them through the full development process in our darkroom.
Process film professionally
Learn the step-by-step techniques involved in developing and processing black and white film, gaining confidence and competence in the darkroom.
Create prints from your negatives
Explore traditional printing techniques, including making contact sheets and producing basic enlargements of your images.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a strong understanding of camera operation, manual controls, film handling and the process of developing and printing your own photography work.
