At EKC Dover College, learning goes far beyond the classroom. For students like Jayden, studying Level 2 Electrical Installation isn’t just about gaining technical knowledge, it’s about putting skills into practice, building confidence, and stepping up to challenges.
Recently, Jayden took part in the KFE4Skills competition finals, representing the College in a high-pressure, practical environment designed to test both ability and mindset.
Taking On the Challenge
As part of the competition, Jayden was tasked with completing a detailed installation project involving PVC piping, metal trunking, and wiring. These are core skills for any aspiring electrician, requiring precision, planning, and strong attention to detail.
Despite the competitive setting, Jayden approached the challenge with a calm and focused mindset:
“I feel quite confident about it.”
Like many students stepping into a competition environment, there were nerves too… but that’s all part of the experience.
“A bit nervous, but I still feel confident.” Jayden explained.
This balance of confidence and nerves is exactly what helps students grow, pushing them to perform under pressure and adapt to real time constraints.
Developing Skills
Competitions like this aren’t just about the end result, they’re about the skills developed along the way. We asked Jayden what key skill he was utilising for the day:
“Definitely a lot of problem solving.”
Electrical installation isn’t just about following instructions, it’s about thinking critically, overcoming challenges, and finding solutions when things don’t go to plan. These are the exact skills employers are looking for in the industry.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
One of the biggest challenges Jayden highlighted was working in a competitive environment:
“If I was working on my own, I could just listen to music and work at my own pace… but working against other people makes it more difficult.”
This reflects a crucial part of industry preparation. On-site work often involves busy environments, tight deadlines, and working alongside others. Experiences like KFE4Skills help students adapt to these conditions early, giving them a valuable edge for their future careers.
Building Confidence for the Future
While Jayden went into the competition wanting to win, he also recognised the personal value of the experience:
“I’d be more confident if I did win or come close to it.”
That’s what opportunities like this are really about – building confidence, resilience, and belief in your own abilities.
Whether students win or not, taking part is a huge achievement.
Your Future in Electrical Installation
Jayden’s journey is a great example of how studying at EKC Dover College opens the door to much more than just a qualification. With opportunities to take part in competitions, work on challenging projects, and develop industry-ready skills, students are fully supported to succeed.
