Travel and tourism student Jess Woodhouse recently won the title of England Queen at the Future of Empowering Women Pageant. Studying Travel and Tourism has helped me shape my career goals and aspirations to take my pageants to the next level.
What does a pageant look like?
Pageants involve multiple rounds, including an interview where contestants answer questions about their desire to be the future of empowering women, their reasons for entering the pageant, their personal background, their charitable activities, and their community involvement.
Pageants cater to various age groups, including Minis, Mini Junior, Junior Miss, Junior Teen, Teen, Miss, Mrs., Classic, and an all-inclusive category that promotes body positivity and confidence building.
My Journey in Pageants
I began as a Junior, then became Miss Dover Town, allowing me to represent my hometown and county. I later became, Kent Coal Queen, supporting coal miners’ charities. Now, as England Queen, I’m excited to compete at the international level.
Charities Supported by FOW
FOW supports several charities, including Cancer for Kids, Air Ambulance, and the Alzheimer’s Society. Cancer for Kids is particularly meaningful to me as my grandad overcame cancer at a young age. I proudly display these charities on my sash during pageants and events. I also have a platform for men’s mental health called Tough to Talk, aimed at raising awareness and reducing the stigma around men’s mental health issues.
Events We Attend
We participate in various events across Kent, such as carnivals and open days like those at Pencester, supporting charities by providing food to food banks, distributing meals to the homeless, donating clothes, and more. I enjoy making appearances at these events and plan to attend many more charity events in the future.
How Did It Feel to Win?
It was amazing. I was so nervous waiting, and then I was in shock when they called my name. It didn’t sink in until about five minutes later.
How Has the College Helped?
The college has been incredibly supportive, helping me brainstorm new fundraising ideas for my charity supporting men’s mental health.
Advice for Aspiring Pageant Participants
If you’re interested in pageants, just go for it. It’s a fantastic way to build confidence. All the competitors are friendly and supportive. Pageants have significantly boosted my confidence, and although I considered stopping when I started college, continuing has helped me grow even more.
Preparing for the International Pageant
After winning England Queen, I’m looking forward to the internationals in November 2024. I’ll be competing against queens from Ireland, Wales, the USA, and Kent. The event will be held at the Grand Burstin Hotel in Folkestone, with about 400 people in attendance.
