Hairdressing students celebrate end‑of‑year achievements at EKC Dover College

25 June 2026
Hairdressing students have marked the end of their year with a live showcase, themed ‘What Represents Me.’.

Hairdressing students at EKC Dover College have marked the end of their year with a live showcase, themed ‘What Represents Me.’

Friends, family and guests from across the College community were invited to attend, giving students the chance to present their work to the people who have supported them throughout their studies.

Students spent time in the lead‑up developing their ideas, with each look designed to reflect their personality, interests or identity.

On the day, the College Salon became the preparation space, as students worked to complete their styles before the show.

Once ready, models walked the red carpet, presenting each look to the audience and judges. The showcase brought together a wide range of styles, with students demonstrating what they’ve learnt across the year.

Prizes were awarded for the top three looks, recognising creativity, presentation and the final result:

  • 1st Place – Megan – ‘Woodland’
  • 2nd Place – Brandy-Lee – ‘Mermaid’
  • 3rd Place – Oakleigh – ‘Lady Gaga’

Brandy-Lee, who achieved 2nd place with her ‘Mermaid’ look inspired by her love of the sea, shared her thoughts on the competition:

“The competition we’re doing has been all about expressing something about yourself. We had to create a look using hair, makeup and an outfit that represents who you are. You can’t do things halfway – you must go all out, otherwise it’s boring. You want to stand out and, obviously, you want to win!”

All our Level 2 and Level 3 students were celebrated with a certificate during a prize-giving ceremony, each also receiving a gift bag from hair care and cosmetics company, ‘Wella’.

Jay, whose model was his mum styled in a ‘biker chic’ theme, reflected on his learning experience across the year:

“I’ve learned quite a few things that I didn’t really know before, like how many layers hair actually has, what products you should use to look after your hair properly, and different cutting techniques like uniform layers. I’ve also learned how different sections and patterns can completely change the finished look. It’s gone really well so far.

“Working with clients is one of my favourite parts. It’s almost like being a bit of a therapist sometimes because you spend so much time chatting to people and getting to know them. I think when people choose Hairdressing, they don’t always realise how social it is. You’re talking to people all day, every day. It’s not just about doing hair.”

Queenie, whose theme was ‘warrior princess’, also reflected on her achievements and experience of competitions:

“I was very proud of what I achieved this year. One of my favourite tasks was a bridal competition, and from that there was also a photo competition linked to WorldSkills.

“The competitions help you learn to work under pressure and to strict timescales, which is really important in hairdressing.”

Congratulations to everyone involved for their work, and we can’t wait to see what they do next, whether that’s carrying on their studies, working in salons, starting an apprenticeship or going onto higher education.

Whether you’re eager to compete in shows like this one, learn from industry experts, or gain experience in our commercial salon, EKC Dover College will equip you with the skills for a successful career in Hairdressing.
