What to expect from life at EKC Dover College

11 March 2025
If you’re ready for something new when it comes to your studies, College might be the perfect step forward.

Making the move from School to College can be an exciting new chapter in your life. If you’re ready for something new when it comes to your studies, College might be the perfect step forward.

More Independence

When you move to College, you’ll gain a new level of independence. College allows you more control over how you manage your time. For example, many full-time College courses only run for three days per week, giving you the flexibility to work, relax, or focus on self-study the rest of the time.

At EKC Dover College, this increased independence also means you can leave campus during breaks or lunch hours. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee in town or taking a walk, the freedom is yours to explore. You’ll also have access to study spaces, where you can work quietly and manage your own learning.

Different Atmosphere

At College, you’ll notice a more relaxed and informal atmosphere. All our tutors are often on a first-name basis with students. This shift in formality reflects the mutual respect that exists between everyone in the College.

With a diverse student body, you’ll meet people from different backgrounds and experiences, making it easy to connect with new friends and discover different interests. For instance, this year, students have created their own clubs such as the Dungeons and Dragons Club and the LGBTQIA+ Society, which are supported by our Student Experience Officer, Summer.

Work-Life Balance

One of the key benefits of attending College is the balance it offers between your studies and your personal life. The flexibility in College allows you to start a part-time job if you want to earn money or gain real-world experience, without it impacting your academic work.

‘Hands-On’ Learning

Many College courses focus on skills training, meaning you’ll be gaining practical experience as part of your education. For example, in Hairdressing, you’ll practice skills on real clients in on-site salon, learning the ropes of working in a professional environment.

This “hands-on” approach is a feature of many College courses, allowing students to work with industry-standard equipment or directly with employers, ensuring that you leave College ready for the workforce.

Focused Learning in One Subject

At College, you choose a specific course to focus on, allowing you to become an expert in that area.  College tutors are often experts in their field, bringing real-world experience into the classroom. For example, the Travel and Tourism Programme Director, Sacha, has extensive experience in the industry and shares that knowledge with students, preparing them for careers in this field.

Real-World Experience

Many courses at College provide opportunities for students to gain real-world experience. You’ll have the chance to meet employers, undertake work placements, and visit industry sites. For example, our Early Years students work with local nurseries like Jack in The Box Nursery, which often leads to full-time job opportunities. Engineering students collaborate with local businesses like the Port of Dover, gaining insights into the skills and roles they’ll need in their future careers.

Extra-Curricular Activities

College is also about exploring new interests and having fun, alongside your studies. Whether it’s competing in student competitions or going on trips like Thorpe Park or Comic-Con, there’s always something going on. These extra-curricular activities allow you to create memories beyond the classroom that will last a lifetime.

Student Leadership Opportunities

If you’re interested in making a difference, College offers leadership opportunities through roles like Class Rep or Students’ Union Officer. These positions allow you to take the lead on initiatives, represent your fellow students, and ensure that everyone’s voice is heard.

Thinking about Your Decision?

Choosing to leave School and come to College is a big decision, but it’s one that offers many opportunities. College is a fresh start, giving you the chance to focus on what really matters to you. Embrace the change, and you might find it to be the best decision you’ve ever made.
