Returning to education as an adult can feel like a big step, but for many, it’s the start of something life changing.
Across our College, adult learners are busy studying a wide range of subject areas, from Maths and English, to Electrical, Engineering, Hairdressing, Automotive and more! So, whether you’re looking to change careers, progress in your current role, or simply try something new, there’s a pathway to suit everyone.
We caught up with some of our adult learners, finding out about their experiences, and how taking that first step has helped them move forward:
Rebecca GCSE Maths
For adults looking to open up new opportunities, achieving core qualifications like English and Maths can be a good starting point. Rebecca chose to resit her GCSE Maths, gaining both a qualification and the confidence to explore her next steps.
“Finally getting a grade 5 for GCSE Maths means that I can actually go out and see what jobs are available for me to go into. It’s going to open up so many more career options.
“I’m glad I’ve succeeded, especially as I wasn’t so confident in myself when I started. College taught me that Maths isn’t scary and that it can be fun. Your hard work will really pay off here.”
Lily Access to HE
After leaving education at 18, Lily wasn’t sure if university would ever be an option. Now, she’s studying Access to HE as a route into Adult Nursing, one of many university pathways available after completing this course.
“As someone who left mainstream education at the age of 18, I think it’s a really good way to get back into it. I’ve always wanted to study Nursing, but I never thought I’d be able to do it because I dropped out of Sixth Form. This course is giving me a second chance.”
Charis Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship
From hands-on trades to more technical and design-focused careers, we also offer pathways like Apprenticeships. Charis chose this route to gain practical experience alongside her studies and move into a more creative engineering role.
“I already have a degree and a Master’s Certificate in Zoology but my ambitions have evolved over time. I realised I was looking for something different, something more hands-on and project based. I felt like I wanted something more creative, where I could be involved in projects that actually contribute to something meaningful.
“That’s why an apprenticeship felt like a good fit, it combined learning with working. Apprenticeships give you both qualifications and real-world skills so they’re very practical and career focused. I felt like that’s what was missing in my previous academic experiences.”
Alfie Level 3 Electrical
Adult courses also offer opportunities to build on existing careers. Alfie returned to College to deepen his knowledge in the Electrical industry, studying alongside his self-employed work.
“I currently work in the Electrical industry at the minute, so I’m studying to further my knowledge and to help me progress in the field. I started out at the bottom and I want to work my way upwards, so I can actually oversee projects and things myself.
“I think the most important thing for me to learn on the Level 3 is probably the science behind it, as it gives me a bit of a deeper understanding as to why I’m doing things and what makes things work.”
Katie Level 2 Hairdressing
For some learners, it’s about creativity and trying something new. Courses like Hairdressing give adult learners the chance to develop practical skills and express themselves in a supportive environment.
“I’m really looking forward to taking in part in the Hair and Fashion Show at the end of the year, we’re allowed to be creative and showcase exactly what we can do. It’s good fun, and I’m looking forward to trying out new things like this in the future.”
Ollie Level 3 Automotive
With courses available in specialist trades, learners can also turn long-standing interests into careers. Ollie is studying Automotive alongside work, with plans to progress further in the industry.
“It’s harder to study as an adult because I’m working during the day too, but it’ll definitely be worth it in the long run. There’s never going to be a perfect time, so I just went for it.
“I’ve always loved cars. I work in the motor trade industry, not fixing cars at the moment but cleaning them as a Valeter. That’s why I’m doing a night course, so I can move into working on them.”
From academic qualifications to practical courses, short upskilling courses to career-focused Apprenticeships, our adult learners are proof that there’s no single path back into education.
Whatever your goal, we have a course to match your needs, and a supportive environment to help you get there.
