If you’re creative, enjoy meeting new people and want to turn your passion into a career, hairdressing could be the perfect path for you.
At EKC Dover College, our Level 2 Hairdressing course gives students the chance to build professional skills in a real salon environment, working with clients, learning industry techniques and growing in confidence along the way.
So, I guess you’re wondering… what is it really like to study hairdressing with us?
We caught up with current students Jay and Brandy-Lee to hear about their experiences so far and why they’d recommend the course to others.
Learning more than just how to cut hair
For Jay, hairdressing wasn’t originally the plan.
“At first, I actually wanted to do barbering,” he explained.
“But I was told I’d need to do hairdressing first. Since starting the course, I’ve really enjoyed it.”
Jay told us that he’s discovered there’s much more to hair than he first realised.
“I’ve learned things like how many layers hair actually has, what products to use to look after it properly, and cutting techniques like uniform layers. I’ve also learned how different sections and patterns can completely change the finished look.”
Brandy-Lee also came into the course with some experience, having practiced on family members at home.
“I’d been doing my mum’s hair for quite a while before starting. I’ve dyed it, shaved it and I found it really interesting and wanted to learn more.”
She says one of the biggest things she’s developed since joining College has been her technical ability.
“Before coming here, I struggled with some cutting techniques, but now I know how to make sure cuts are even, how to create layers properly and how different techniques affect the final result.”
She added: “Colouring has probably been one of the biggest improvements for me. I had no idea how to do foils before, but I stuck with it and figured it out.”
Building confidence and meeting new people
Hairdressing is often seen as a creative career, but both students say the social side is just as important.
Jay said: “Working with clients is one of my favourite parts. You spend so much time chatting to people and getting to know them. It’s almost like being a bit of a therapist sometimes.”
He added that starting College was a big step for him.
“At first, I struggled because I have anxiety, so coming into a new environment was challenging,” he said.
“But now I’ve settled in, made friends, and my confidence has definitely improved.”
Brandy-Lee agrees that College has helped her grow.
“When I first applied, I was terrified because you have to come in on your own and meet lots of new people. But everyone here is lovely and really supportive,” she said.
“It felt a bit like a family, which really helped me settle in.”
For parents and carers, this supportive environment can make all the difference when young people are taking that next step after school.
Genuine salon experience and exciting competitions
A big part of the course is working in the College salon with real clients, helping students prepare for industry life.
Brandy-Lee says this has been one of the most rewarding parts.
She said: “When someone comes in wanting something done and you’re able to do it well, seeing how happy they are afterwards is such a good feeling. It’s nice being able to make someone smile.”
Students also have the chance to take part in competitions throughout the year, giving them the opportunity to showcase their creativity.
“Competitions are probably some of the most fun things we’ve done,” said Brandy-Lee.
“They help build your confidence, teach you to work under pressure, and make you feel proud of your work.”
From themed challenges to runway presentations such as our end of year live showcase, these experiences help students push themselves creatively and gain valuable industry-style experience.
A course for everyone
Jay is currently the only male student in his class and says he hopes more young men will consider hairdressing.
“I’d say to any other guy thinking about hairdressing: don’t let it hold you back. It doesn’t matter if you’re gay, straight, or whatever gender you want to be. If you’re getting out there, feeling confident, and doing something you enjoy, just crack on with it.”
It’s a reminder that hairdressing is a career for anyone with creativity, passion and people skills.
